The Chair was instituted in the University of Calicut by RGCET, which is registered under the aegis of Calicut University Staff Organisation in 2004, with the main objective of disseminating the ideals and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi among the younger generation and the students in particular
Conducting of Gandhi Darshan Study Programme for the UP and HS students in Malappuram District, publication of books on Gandhian thoughts, organizing nationals seminars, debates, workshops, lectures to promote perspectives on non-violence, peace, truth, self reliance, conflict resolution, tolerance, secularism, democratic decentralization, human rights, social justice and environmental protection
Chair also conduct appropriate programmes like honouring Veteran Gandhians, presenting Gandhi Chair Awards to Gandhian Activities, Authors or Institutions every year, Inter-collegiate Gandhi Quiz competition for college students, Gandhi Quiz and painting competitions for school children and Personality Development Classes for students and youth. Awareness camps on National Integration and empowerment of youth are organised for the NSS volunteers
Chair also seeks to empower women in the rural villages to strengthen the democratization of the society and the up-liftment of the poor. In association with Energy Management Center (EMC) and Center for Environment and Development(CED) we undertake several awareness programs in energy conservation and related activities
Chair has the proud privilege of organizing a number of national seminars with the assistance of ICHR, ICSSR, Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Smiti, New Delhi, Institute of Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of Kerala, KSCSTE and Ministry of Forest and Environment, Govt. of India
